“She’s only 13 and too young to think of matrimony. Besides, I have driven this man away from my home and won’t have him for a son-in-law.” Excitedly telling his story to Chief Police Prosecutor W. G. Geier yesterday afternoon, an irate father, John Kliles, 7706 Aberdeen-av N.E., disclosed the marriage of his daughter Catherine to Joseph Christian and demanded the arrest of the husband for taking the girl away without his consent.
Mrs. Klies, the father said, approved of her daughter’s choice, and when Klies refused to sanction the marriage, mother, daughter and prospective son-in-law left the home in Aberdeen-av and Klies has since been unable to locate them. Christian went to room in the Klies home last winter, Klies says, coming to Cleveland from Pittsburg, where he is said to have gone under the name of William Fiore. Klies claims trouble in his home began with the arrival of the new boarder.
Klies resented attentions paid his daughter by the newcomer. Last week Christian was ordered to find new quarters. Mrs. Klies and Catherine disappeared with him. Tuesday Klies says he received a letter from his wife, telling of Catherine’s marriage and their new found happiness. Geier advised Klies to submit proof of the girl’s youth.
Before the marriage license clerk the girl declared she was 18. Klies admits the girl might pass for 18, but insists his daughter was born Jan. 20, 1901. He points to the records at St. Casmir’s Polish Catholic church, 82223 Sowinski-av N.E., where he says Catherine was baptised the day after birth. Until the week before marriage, Klies says, the girl was in the fifth grade at the Sowinski school.
“I’m through with them,” said Klies. “I don’t want to see either of them again, unless they’ll return without Christian.” The couple declared residence at Cedar-av S.E. and E. 22d-st before the license clerk, but neither has been found at this address.
