Case File: Charles Albert Breitwieser (1907)

137 Taggart was the residence of Bernhardt Breitwieser and the last residence of his son, Charles Albert Breitwieser, before he moved to Cleveland, Ohio. It was located on the southwest side of Taggart across from the end of Sarah St. Next door was the much larger double lot of Bernhardt’s brother Martin Breitwieser – 131 Taggart.  In the 1890 map below Martin’s larger property is outlined in green – which included a brick building on the southern lot and three wood frame buildings on the north lot. According to this map Bernhardt didn’t own the property at 137, which was instead owned by a William Hockenberger.  The house at 137 Taggart is outlined in blue.  John Street ran behind these lots, beyond which was Uniondale Cemetery.

Taggart has since been renamed as Charles St and Sarah is Strauss St.  John St has completely disappeared although the building owned by “A. Lanz” on the corner of John St is still standing.  Martin Breitwieser’s brick building is the only other one still standing – the Mark J. Puharic Plumbing and Heating Inc. company as of Oct 2024.  See the Google maps street view below showing Martin’s building in green.  The brick building that was the residence of Bernhardt Breitwieser has been replaced by a very small red wooden shed, outlined in blue.

The below aerial view also has the Martin Breitwieser property in green and the matching outline of the approximate location of Bernhardt’s residence in blue – to match the 1890 map.
