BYRNES QUITE MYSTIFIED
---
HE KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT THE EAST
RIVER HOTEL MURDER

The East River Hotel murder still appears to be a complete mystery. The police are working every channel that promises to clear it up; but it is safe to say that their efforts so far have been unsuccessful. They promise to inform the public as soon as anything tangible is discovered. So far, however, they say there is absolutely “no news”.

The “Frenchy” theory, which was advanced by Inspector Byrnes late on Friday night, now seems to be completely exploded. He then stated that the murderer was a ruffian known as “Frenchy,” a cousin of another ruffian known as “Frenchy,” whom the police had in custody. Yesterday the Inspector said that he did not think that Frenchy No. 2 was the murderer.

“Then,” he was asked, “why don’t you discharge Frenchy No. 1, whom you are holding?”

“How do you know I have not,” he answered.

“But have you?” he was asked.

“I refuse to answer.” he responded.

“Well, what do you think of the murder now?” he was asked.

“I have no theory for publication,” he answered. “I don’t know anything more about the murder then you do.”

At the request of Inspector Byrnes, Coroner Schultze yesterday gave a commitment to the House of Detention for Mary Briscoe, a woman living at 12 Roosevelt Street, who had been arrested by Detective Sergeant McClusky as a witness in the caes. This woman is believed to be a very important witness, but the Inspector refused to talk about the arrest.

WASHINGTON, April 28 – Inspector Byrnes of the New-York police force has communicated with Major Moore, Superintendent of the Washington Police, concerning the murderer who is supposed to be “Jack the Ripper,” and the result of the correspondence was the sending out of an order requesting the officers to look out for and arrest the supposed murderer.
