- 1789: Born in Wayne County, North Carolina – parents currently unknown
- c1811: married Amelia “Milly” Edwards
- 1813: daughter Jerusha Ann Jernigan is born
- 1819: only son, David James Jernigan, is born
- 1822: daughter Amelia Jane Jernigan is born
- 1824: Fayette County, Tennessee is established. At the first meet David is appointed a Justice of the Peace and is elected as County Trustee. On Dec 6 he takes the oath of office before John H. Bills, Esq.
- 1825:
- Feb 9: David resigned as Justice of the Peace
- Feb 14: His mill, constructed on the North fork of the Wolf River, is established as a public mill.
- Aug: David is elected to the grand jury and awarded $12.25 as compensation for “keeping the Gard of prisoners & their horses, &c”
- 1826: David is again appointed Justice of the Peace and takes the oath of office on 13 April
- 1827:
- Jan 9: Davis is again elected as County Trustee for a term of two years.
- daughter Narcissa Jernigan is born about this year, exact date unknown
- 1828: daughter Elizabeth Angeline Jernigan is born
- 1830: grandson David Allen Gates is born
- 1831: David sells an enslaved person named Daniel, age about 44, to John Brown for $386
- 1833:
- grand daughter Sarah Gates is born, exact date is unknown.
- Jun 13: David gives slaves Malinda, age 22 and dark complexion, and her child Rody, age 18 months, and Mariah age 10 to his daughter Jerusha. He also gives a boy Harry, aged two weeks to his grandson, son of daughter Jerusha, David Allen Gates.
- July 1: William Hays owes a debt to David of $600, and files in court to hold four enslaved people – Hanna, Dennis, Harriet, and Diana – in trust with Daniel Johnson as collateral for this debt. Hays has four months to pay $150 per month. It’s unknown if he was able to fulfill the obligation or not.
- 1836: grandson Andrew LaFayette Gates is born
- 1839: daughter Amelia Jane is married to David C. Booth on 19 March
- 1841:
- Jan 2: David writes his last will and testament
- July 4: grand daughter America J. Booth is born
- 1842:
- Mar 31: daughter Narcissa married John H. Morgan. On the same day, and almost certainly related in some way, he was in a fight with a man named Samuel Morgan, likely a relative of John H. Morgan.
- April 1: Died in Fayette County, Tennessee from injuries in the flight the day before.
