Case File: Mailahn Family (1912)

Louis Mailahn was born in the region of Pomerania, likely the section that is now part of Germany as he would later give Germany as his place of origin. He came to the United States with his parents and siblings in about 1872 and the family settled in Wisconsin.  He married Augusta Schmidt in 1879 and had 11 children. He bought his farm from his brother-in-law Carl Kollath, across the road from another brother-in-law Carl Holz. After the deaths of his mother, wife, and five of his daughters to tuberculosis, he attempted to take his own life but was saved. His son Willie was also highly despondent and tried to convince the family to commit suicide together, they refused. Willie then decided to take matters into his own hands. While another son Eddie was gone to pick up two of the younger sons from school, Walter and George, Willie killed his father, sister, brother, and then himself.
