  • Eckel, John J.:  Resident of 31 Bond St and suspect in the murder of Harvey Burdell.  According to Green-Wood Cemetery, his plot was purchased in 1862 by himself and someone named Frances L. Wilbur.  He was first buried in a receiving tomb as 7 Dec 1869 and later removed to his final lot #13688 on 24 Jun 1870.  A receiving tomb (or dead house) is a structure designed for the temporary storage of bodies, usually during the winter when the ground is frozen and cannot be but for a permanent grave.  They are usually made of stone or brick, coffins were stored in wall niches or on shelves until buried.
