Story: A Death at La Junta Army Air Field (1944)
The USAT Wheaton first launched on 21 Sep 1918 as the SS War Jupiter and was renamed the SS Wheaton in Nov 1918 for the Red Star Line. It was turned over to the US Army Transport Service on 8 Oct 1920 and recommissioned as the USAT Wheaton in honor of Major General Frank Wheaton, a civil war commander. The Wheaton was designated as the primary funeral ship of the US Military, making several trips between New York and Antwerp, Belgium. One of these trips contained the body of Pearl Franklin Webster. The ship was decommissioned on 15 Jul 1922 and eventually sold in 1927 to the American-Hawaiian Steamship Co and renamed the SS Alaskan. It was torpedoed and sunk by a U-172 off the coast of Brazil on 28 Nov 1942.

USAT Wheaton – Departed Antwerp, Belgium 20 Sep 1921 for Hoboken, New Jersey.
