Story: A Death at La Junta Army Air Field (1944)

The USS Maui was originally built as the SS Maui, a commercial passenger ship for the Matson Line out of San Francisco, California in 1916.  It was acquired by the United States Navy on 6 Mar 1918 and recommissioned as the USS Maui, serving as a troop transport vessel for the next year and a half.  It was returned to the Matson Line for commercial service in Sept 1919 until it was purchased again, this time by the United States Army, in Dec 1941 and recommissioned as the USAT Maui for WWII.  It was laid up in 1946 and scrapped in 1948.

On 14 Sep 1918 the ship was in Hoboken, New Jersey and transported Co F of the 807th Pioneer Infantry to Europe, which included Pearl F. Webster.
